March 2023 Primary Class News

By Mrs. Tasneem Mamdani, Primary Guide

Salaam Dear Parents,

Ramadhan Mubarak! May this holy month bring you and your family peace, prosperity and blessings.

March has been an exciting month filled with events and activities.  We had a number of special days to celebrate: 15th Shaban Maulud Al Hujjah, Planting Day with parents, Observations, and not to mention learning in-depth about the blessed month of Ramadan.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our families who joined us for the celebration of the Birth of the Imam of our time (AATF). Our primary students were excited to perform, and we were delighted to see their enthusiasm and confidence on stage. Their cute and colorful costumes added an extra element to the performance. We are grateful for your support and attendance.

15th Shaban Maulud Al Hujjah

Spring is the season when children are so excited to be outside and there is so much to do and see with the changing season.  We discussed the signs of Spring and each child shared the signs they have seen outside buds, flowers and sprouts. All of the signs of new growth and renewal. We are also reading a variety of books to the children, including stories that celebrate the arrival of Spring and Ramadhan.

Math:

The multiplication, addition and subtraction boards have been very popular. The children are repeating these activities and working towards mastery of the facts. Also, the 45 Layout (Place Value math work) has been constructed almost every day this month. Some of the students continued working on geometry concepts, including identifying and naming shapes, and measuring angles. Students have also been introduced to How to Count Money.

The children love to discover things for themselves, and learn best when engaged in self-chosen activities. Each child has different abilities and interests learning at his or her own rate, and through repetition the children are allowed to work on something until they have mastered it.

Language Development:

We continued to focus on developing language skills in our young learners. We encourage them to use descriptive words to communicate their thoughts and feelings, and also work on building their vocabulary through fun and engaging activities.

In addition to language development, our young learners love to play sound games from their sound books, we use various materials and activities to help the children identify and remember them. We play games to help the children learn their sound in a fun and engaging way. We also encourage them to practice writing letters by tracing sand letters and then copying on the chalkboard. Most of the students have mastered their sounds and now started building CVC words using movable letters.

Older students have been introduced to more complex language concepts, including grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation. They are also working on developing reading comprehension skills by reading a variety of books. We encourage you to continue to read with your children at home and discuss the stories with them.

One of the foundation skills for learning is focus and concentration; a day is never interrupted by having to move on to the next lesson before finishing the current one. It is amazing to watch the children learn to think for themselves as they grow in confidence and experience.

Science and Nature:

We want to thanks to all of you who participated in our Planting Day. It was heartwarming to see our students working with their parents to learn about different parts of a plant, how to care for it, and how to plant it in the soil.

Your involvement in this activity not only helped your child learn about gardening but also taught them the importance of community and working together. It was a wonderful day of learning and fun, and we couldn’t have done it without your support.

Our students are learning the life cycle of a plant and different parts of a plant and what they need to grow. They will have hands- on experiences with planting, watering, and caring for plants.

Our classroom has live butterfly caterpillars! The caterpillars will be in our classroom for a few weeks. During this time, students will observe them as they transform from caterpillars to chrysalises, and eventually into beautiful butterflies.

Through this amazing process children will have the opportunity to see first-hand the miraculous creations of Allah!

March 2023 Elementary News

By Ms. Hind Sabir, Elementary Guide

Salaam Dear Parents,

Shahr Ramadhan Mubarak to you and your families. As we sowed the seeds during Planting Day, awaiting the harvest of vegetables for our palates and flowers for our eyes, so goes during this holy month, we sow the seeds for our souls, انشاء الله . May we be among those who are closest to Allah (swt), and reap the rewards of taqwa until Allah grants us another Holy Month انشاء الله .

We began the month of March with the great event honoring the birth of Our Imam, Imam Mahdi (ajtf). Elementary students wrote their own Reader’s Theater scripts and performed them on stage. They also recited poetry and wrote pledges to their Imam.

Mawlud al Hujjah (ajtf) Reader’s Theater
Mawlud al Hujjah (ajtf) Poetry Recitation

Cosmic Ed lessons were aligned with the coming of spring through botany lessons. Younger friends collected leaf specimens and learned about the parts and functions of the plant. While, Upper El began a closer look at plants and their parts beginning a collection based on features of the leaf’s classification including simple to complex, and identification by shape, margins, veins, and leaflets.

As we hail the beginning of Shahr Ramadhan, we began the review of Asma’ Al Husna during a balloon-popping that has one of the Best and Most Perfect Names of Allah (swt) for the class to recall. Read Aloud has also been adjusted for the holy month as we are listening to the Glorious Quraan in the magnificent voice of Egyptian reciter Abdul Basit Abdus Samad.

Popping Balloons for Asma’ al Husna

In late February and March, we had the blessing of celebrating the life and times of Sakeena Zaidi, Ali Shayan, and Kian Raza. Children made timelines of their lives with pictures from each year. They wrote a detail for each year of their lives and presented their timeline to the class.

Researches are one of the great self-constructing works. Children choose a topic they wish to research, read about their topic, then write a set of organized facts. They then rewrite their work on special paper and in their best handwriting – this is called the publication. Then, if they choose, they present their findings to the class. This month we had presentations of North America, South America, the United States, the layers of the earth, constellations, tigers, dragons, and Beyblades.

Elementary also had the privilege and the pleasure of joining the Middle School Drama Club. They worked and rehearsed for the month and presented a retelling of the Boston Tea Party.

El joining Middle School Drama Club

During this month, the school saw some construction work. The Montessori Method lets the child explore and ask in real time if the situation permits. During a morning work cycle, the children were observing the work of one of the construction workers, who we came to know as Lencho Lencho. He offered his wisdom and kindness. He answered questions and then gave a lesson to the children with a little follow-up work. This spontaneous opportunity provided an outlet to the child’s inquisitive mind and also a skill of good communication and respect for other’s work. It was a lovely opportunity for all.

Spotlight of the Month: Self-Construction

Allah (swt) has placed within each of us the fitrah, our nature that connects us to Him. The experiences we have from birth until adulthood shape what kind of person we become and how prominent is our fitrah within our daily lives. The elementary years create a foundation for cultivating the fitrah in a manner that awakens the awareness in the child while also allowing the child to work in a manner that ultimately culminates in the self-construction of that child. The elementary years shape the adult we will become – a human being who is confident, productive, and has a deep sense of taqwa. Therefore, it is imperative that the child is given the respect by the adult and provides for the liberty of the child, creating pathways for them to know Allah through their experiences and reflections. Self-construction is for the complete human being. The dimensions are physical, intellectual, social, emotional, moral, spiritual, and even touches upon an individual’s personality and creativity.

Take for example, the work of the elementary of cooking projects. From a general perspective, it is a fun work for the child, but it touches on so much more. Recently, we had the pleasure of tasting the Waraq Innab (Stuffed Grape Leaves aka Dolma) of Mazen and Kian during planting day.

The personality and creativity of the child brought the choice of Waraq Innab. The thought of this work being laborious and tedious never entered the minds of the boys because this was a work they initiated. Nevertheless, it was a physical labor that they undertook.

Intellectually, the boys had to figure out how much they needed for the entire classroom and for parents on that day. Ultimately, they made the social scene as they went about the day offering their hard work to our visiting parents and their peers. The emotional element comes without observation but happens within the children as they see their initial thoughts come to fruition. Spiritually, the boys discussed the provisions Allah (swt) made for them – the physical ingredients as well as the mental capacity of humans to think and work with their hands – a blessing from Allah (swt). In the end, the food was delicious as attested to by many parents and classmates and the boys’ self-constructed along the way, ما شاء الله .

الحمد لله

March 2023 Quran Studies News

By Mrs. Fadia Ali, Quran Studies teacher

Alsalamu Alikum Dear Parents,

I wish you all a blessed month of Ramadan and acceptable عِبَادات [worship] Insha’Allah (swt).

This is a summary of your children’s Qur’an work during the month of March:

Primary:

Level one: Children are Practicing Surah Al Qadrالقَدر  & Al kafiroon الكَافِرون in addition to reinforcing the previous learned Surahs.

Level two: Children are practicing Surah Al Humaza الهُمَزَة & Surah Al Teen التين, in addition to reinforcing the previous learned Surahs. They also practiced Duaa al Qabool القُبُول  طَلَب (All Dua’as are from the Noble Qur’an).

We usually focus in these two primary levels on the correct pronunciation of the Arabic letters and words, and on the memorization of a number of small Surahs and Dua’as the correct way.

Elementary:

Group One & Two (level one Qur’an): Children are still practicing reading small Surahs from the Holy Quran after they finished learning Arabic reading grammars, Alhamdulillah.

Children, who joined Wisdom Academy at Elementary level, are still working also on memorizing Ayah Al Kursi آية الكرسي   (part two).

Group Three (level two Qur’an): Children are still practicing reading Surah Al Brooj البُرُوج and other small Surahs and they memorized some Arabic vocabulary (close family members); they also started composing some Arabic words, although, our main focus at this level is reading.

Group Four and Five (level three Qur’an): Children practiced part two of Surah Hasher الحشر ; they also continued practicing writing and memorizing new Qur’an vocabulary (Part 2 of clothing & housing).

Our focus for the rest of this year for groups four & five will be mostly on writing and reading. Our goal is to help children learn the most efficient way of Arabic writing, help them develop a sense of direction of their Arabic writing (which is opposite of their English writing), and develop a sense of the right size of the Arabic written words.

Middle School:

6th grade: Students are still practicing and memorizing the first part of Surah Yaseen يَس, and memorizing new Quran vocabulary. They also continued analyzing and translating verses from the Holy Quran based on Arabic language grammars which they learned previously.

8th grade-level 1: group 1 are still working on improving their writing and reading skills by practicing Ayat Bir Al Walidain  بِرالوالدَيْن آيات of Surah Al Israa الإسراء, and writing and memorizing more Quran vocabulary such as adjectives and TLDR words …etc.

In addition to the previous; Group 1 A has learned basic grammar lessons (Arabic Fragments part one), and group 1B has learned new grammar lessons (present tense’s doer indicators).

8th grade- level 2: Students have finished memorizing Ayat Al Taharah  الطَهَارة of Surah Al Ma’idah and started practicing and memorizing Ayat Bir Al Walidain  بِرالوالدَيْن آيات of Surah Al Israa الإسراء. They also learned a new grammar lesson (Conditional Sentences) and memorized a new vocabulary.

March 2023 – Middle School News

SCIENCE NEWS: By Mrs. Malak Charara

March was a light month for science lessons since it included our Spring Break, yet Middle Schoolers were able to learn several new concepts.

Grade 6 students continued their investigations of “weather and water” and were introduced to one of the important parameters in the atmosphere which is Air Pressure–how it is measured and what factors affect its value. Students were also introduced to the Three States of Matter (solid, liquid, and gas) and some of its properties to help set the foundation for the upcoming lessons.

Grade 6 students working on several experiments to understand the concept of Air Pressure

Grade 8 students resumed their studies about electricity and made connections with what they learned about magnetism to explore the phenomenon of electromagnetism and how engineers used it to make our lives easier in many applications. They finished their “Electromagnetic Force” book, learning about the history of inventing the first automobiles and how it led to inventing electrical cars. We identified some of the challenges related to these cars and the possible solutions and compared different models on the market based on each’s features. Finally, students discussed various energy resources in terms of their effects on the environment and the future of Renewable Energy Resources.
