In Science, Grade 7 students continued their investigations about changes that happen on a particles level when matter is heated or cooled. Through their lab experiments, they were able to observe changes in temperature and learned how to calculate the changes in thermal energy in calories, taking into account the mass and change in temperature of that matter. They also understood the criteria and constraints when it comes to engineering designs of thermoses that keep our beverages hot and double-paned windows to keep buildings warm during winter.

Grade 7 investigating how adding or removing thermal energy
changes the phrases of matter in wax and sugar.
Grade 7 experimenting on substances to see which, if added to ice,
would drop its temperature below 0 degree Celcius

In Elective Nutrition, Grade 7 students learned about factors that affect their daily needs of nutrients and how much of each food category their body needs through MyPlate. We discussed ways to include more fruits and vegetables in their meals and snacks. They also learned how to calculate the amount of added sugar in pre-made and bought food and assess how much in percentage it takes from their healthy carbohydrate daily needs. Students were able to identify the snack/food that they need to eat less from to minimize added sugar consumption. Remember, cutting down added sugars completely is not a realistic goal for our teenagers, yet reducing it with time and helping them choose better options for their sweet tooth from natural resources is.

In Biology, Grade 9 students started with a new unit this month to study about global populations and ecosystems. We investigated energy flow and cycling of elements and matter through the four spheres we have on Earth (atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere). Students also studied about communities and ecosystems’ dynamics that help us understand the relationship between organisms among each other and the effect of biotic and abiotic factors in their environments on them, as well as factors that limit the growth of populations and its relation to extinction of species.

Grade 9 separating photosynthetic pigments from spinach leaves using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) paper and investigating cellular respiration in yeast.

In Mathematics, grade 7 students learned how to simplify and use ratios of two or more quantities, they also studied rate and speed. Later students practiced unit conversions and applied the acquired knowledge to solve real-world problems involving ratio, rate, and speed. Students also learned about percentages and how to solve problems involving percentage increase or decrease. Their knowledge in percentages was extended to understanding the math behind discounts and sales tax in a percent shopping project, where each student created their own shop sale poster and calculated their own bill after sales tax and discounts. Lastly our students started recalling basic geometry concepts and applied new theorems to solve problems.

In Geometry, grade 9 students continued learning about congruence in right triangles and applied congruence criteria in problems involving overlapping and multiple triangles. Later students extrapolated their knowledge in special segments in triangles (like bisectors, medians and altitudes) to investigate the characteristics of their points of concurrencies. They learned how to locate and construct the circumcenter, incenter, centroid and orthocenter, and decide which point of concurrency is needed to solve a specific problem. Students also identified the relationships between angle measures and side lengths in triangles after addressing inequality theorems. Lastly our students moved on to investigating the interior and exterior angles of polygons, examining properties of kites and trapezoids, and then differentiating the properties and conditions of parallelograms and special parallelograms. These properties were used to implement a STEM project: building a parallelogram hydraulic lift.

In social studies, the 7th graders completed their study of Unit 2: Islam in Medieval Times and Unit 3: The Culture and Kingdoms of West Africa. Each student volunteered to study one of the topics in each unit and prepare lessons and quizzes on their topics. They presented their lessons to the rest of the class and assessed their classmates’ learning using their quizzes.

In the 9th grade world history course, the students have completed their study of Unit 3: The First Global Age, with lessons on early modern tranformations in different societies and regions of the globe, including the Muslim world, China, western Europe, and the Americas. Some of the topics included European colonialism and the globalization of trade and commerce.

In English, both classes have begun novel units. The 7th graders are reading The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain and 9th grade is reading A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. We completed the grammar unit on the ten sentence patterns of the English language and are not continuing with a study of the different types of clauses and phrases.

Nov / Dec 2023 Primary 2 Class News

By Mrs. Fizza Rizvi, Primary 2 Guide

And just in the blink of an eye, here we are at the end of the first semester! We are truly thankful to Almighty Allah for the success of this semester. It was truly an amazing experience to meet all the parents and discuss the remarkable performance of our deserving students.

As we are unfolding every layer of our journey, not only are our children learning and experiencing new things, they are also teaching us many important lessons, and “observation” is one of them.

In our classroom, along with Practical Life lessons and Sensorial lessons, we have now started to dig more deeply into language, math, and geography.

In talking about language, i.e., communication, it allows the child to express her needs and ideas to others. Through language we are able to cooperate, collaborate, receive knowledge, and pass knowledge to others. Children go through a series of stages to acquire language. Montessori education provides a language-rich environment that helps children develop strong language skills. This includes both spoken and written language. For the enrichment of vocabulary we have tons of material all around us, it does not need to be only the material on the shelf — because everything around us has a name, and it is an addition to the child’s vocabulary bank.

For the second part of language, which is writing, we do not start writing alphabets right away. We have so many lessons which help indirectly in the development of writing skills. For example, we have metal inset lessons: though it may only look like tracing the shapes with different colored pencils — indirectly, it is motivating the child and helping his small hands for the writing strokes. Again, every lesson has an indirect teaching strategy.

As we are going deeper into language and we are learning new names around us, we are also learning our numbers. You may still hear them counting in an unordered sequence, but it’s just a new world for them — they are still learning the relation between recognizing numbers and the quantity.

With the help of Language and Math, we have started doing some big map work. They are over the moon to count the 7 continents and their names. And it is a very joyful moment to see when they find Antarctica on the globe because it is on the bottom of it or when they realize that Asia is the biggest continent and you hear the scream “Teacher look I found the biggest continent” or “You know what? My grandma lives in Asia” or “Australia, I went there with my Baba and we saw kangaroo.”

There are many more beautiful moments which we get to share. I really feel overwhelmed to be a part of their most important journey.

Last but not least, we had a beautiful “celebration of life” event for our friends. And we are looking forward to celebrating more inshAllah! And not to forget — enjoy your winter break with your family as we enjoyed time with our friends on the last day before break by having a pizza party!

Nov / Dec 2023 Primary 1 Class News

By Tasneem Mamdani, Primary Guide

Dear Primary Parents,
Salaam Alaykum,
May Allah (swt) bless you and your families.
Our sincerest condolences to the Imām of our time, Imām Mahdi (ʿAJTF), on the commemoration of Sayyidah Fatimah’s Shahadah.
November and December brought a whirlwind of activities, from classroom observations to Parent Education sessions and conferences. We appreciate your attendance at the conferences; it was a joy to connect with each of you. It was delightful to engage in conversations with everyone.
Our youngest learners are making strides in navigating their once unfamiliar environment. Parents can play a pivotal role in fostering their independence by allowing them to tackle challenging tasks with patience and encouragement. Witnessing a child take pride in walking to school, managing their backpack, and changing shoes solo is a heartwarming moment indeed.

Inside the classroom, the children have been actively engaged in various activities. It’s important to note that many materials do not have a final product to bring home. Children are often in a stage of repeating concrete experiences to master materials before progressing to new ones. This stage is known as the Sensitive Periods, where a child easily absorbs information in specific ways.

Sensorial: Sensorial activities have been a highlight, with children exploring colors, shapes, textures, and sounds. Geography studies took us on a journey of sorting objects into categories such as land, air, and water, and even magnetic and non-magnetic items. We delved into the introduction of continents, with pin-pricking activities becoming a favorite in geography lessons. In addition, we are also learning about weather of different continents and also explored how animals, people and plants prepare for the winter.

Practical Life Activities: Lessons continue to be of utmost importance, instilling discipline, confidence, and inner peace in our young learners.

Language Activities: Language development is in full swing, with preschoolers mastering letter identification, sounds, and number recognition. Younger ones are practicing their sounds and writing cursive letter and also practice writing their name. If you are practicing name writing at home, please have the first letter of your child’s name capitalized & the rest lowercase. On the phonetic sounds, we extended linguistic boundary to word formations and reading sentences. We regularly worked with phonetic blending sounds, Guided reading, handwriting on a lined paper or unlined chalkboard, tracing lines with a finger or pencil, sandpaper letters, and even handgrip with metal insets. These activities are timed to build fluency and automaticity.

Mathematics: Our younger learners are embracing numbers through engaging activities with sandpaper numbers. While, the older children are delving into advanced math concepts, with kindergarteners exploring addition and subtraction and multiplication. The goal is to gain memorization of facts through repetition and hand on experience with the materials.

Islamic Studies: Islamic Studies have covered topics such as Allah sending the Qurʾān, the importance of wilāyah through the example of Sayyidah Fāṭimah, and lessons on Prophet Nūḥ. Fiqh lessons included discussions on cleanliness and najaasah/tahaarah.
It is crucial to instill the love of the Ahl al-Bayt (ʿa) in the hearts of our young children. Each story shared aims to create and strengthen their love for these great personalities, inspiring them to choose them as their role models.
Primary students attended a gathering in the Elementary classroom where the Elementary students organized an event to mark the anniversary of the martyrdom of Lady Fatimah al-Zahra’ (ع). The session commenced with a recitation of the Holy Qur’an, followed by poetry, a timeline outlining Lady Fatimah’s (ع) life, a theatrical presentation, and a heartfelt elegy in her honor.

Special Thanks:
Primary students had the privilege of enjoying story time with the esteemed Sheikh Amin Rastani and
Sayed Jawad Al Wahedi.

We express our sincere gratitude to Sheikh Amin Rastani and Sayed Jawad Al Wahedi for graciously taking time out of their busy schedules to spend with our Primary children. Their presence is deeply appreciated, and we look forward to welcoming them more often.

The conclusion of the semester was marked by dedicating our morning to the children of Palestine. We gathered in the Elementary classroom for a session offering Fatiha and words from our esteemed Sheikh Al-Saadi. Later in the day, we enjoyed a delightful lunch featuring pizza and juice.

A sincere thank you extends to all parents for their continued support.

Wishing you a safe and refreshing winter break. We look forward to the exciting journey that lies ahead in the new year! Inshallah.

Warm regards,

Mrs. Tasneem Mamdani
