October 2023 – 7th and 9th Grade News

By Br. Yusuf Ali, English, History, and Social Studies Teacher:

In social studies, the 7th graders completed their study of Unit 1, Europe During Medieval Times, with lessons about the Roman Catholic Church in medieval Europe, life in medieval towns, the decline of feudalism and the Byzantine Empire. They have begun our study of Unit 2, Islam in Medieval Times. Each student has volunteered to study one of the topics in the unit and prepare a lesson and quiz on their topic. They will present their lessons to the rest of the class and assess their classmates’ learning using their quizzes.

In the 9th grade world history course, the students have completed their study of Unit 1, The Foundations of World History, and Unit 2, The World before 1750, which covers the rise of the new major civilizations that replaced the empires of the ancient world, such as the Muslim empire, Byzantine empire, and Tang dynasty in China, as well as civilizations in West Africa and the Americas. We also began Unit 3, The First Global Age and the 9th grade students are preparing a presentation and quiz for the 7th graders on the “Gunpower Empires” of the Ottomans, Safavids, and Mughals.

In English, both classes have continued their units on short stories, practicing their skills at interpreting and analyzing literary texts. The 7th graders used what they learned to write their own original short stories utilizing some of the advanced literary devices, such as frequent changes of narrative perspective, that they encountered in the stories we studied. The 9th graders engaged in deep thinking and analysis of more sophisticated literary texts that dealt with themes of social injustice and generational understanding.

In Mathematics, grade 7 students learned the basics of algebraic manipulations. They worked on simplification, expansion, and factorization of algebraic expressions by extracting common factors and grouping terms. They were also introduced to factorization of algebraic expressions using area models. Later students practiced solving equations and getting the solutions of both linear and fractional equations, and discovered how to find out the number of solutions of an equation, if there is any. Finally connecting everything they learned, students applied the acquired knowledge to form linear equations in order to solve real-world problems.

Grade 7 students practiced identifying Equivalent Algebraic Equations
using Algebra tiles online

In Geometry, grade 9 students learned about different kinds of rigid motions including reflection, translation, rotation, and glide reflection, and how to construct these transformations with and without the coordinate system. They were also introduced to symmetry and its relation to rigid motions. Later students learned about triangle congruence where new theorems were introduced and used in writing proofs. Using what the learned about congruent triangles, students worked on a bridge building project to see how triangles play a huge role in the stability and sturdiness of constructions.

By Mrs. Malak Charara, Science and Electives Teacher:

– In Science, Grade 7 students continued their investigations about changes that happen on a particles level when matter is heated or cooled. Through their lab experiments, they were able to observe changes in temperature and learned how to calculate the changes in thermal energy in calories, taking into account the mass and change in temperature of that matter. They also understood the criteria and constraints when it comes to engineering designs of thermoses that keep our beverages hot and double-paned windows to keep buildings warm during winter.

Grade 7 students learning about the phenomenon of thermal energy transfer between hot and cold liquids.
Grade 7 students investigating the difference between dissolving and melting of solids using colorful skittles.

– In Elective Nutrition, Grade 7 students learned about factors that affect their daily needs of nutrients and how much of each food category their body needs through MyPlate. We discussed ways to include more fruits and vegetables in their meals and snacks. They also learned how to calculate the amount of added sugar in pre-made and bought food and assess how much in percentage it takes from their healthy carbohydrate daily needs. Students were able to identify the snack/food that they need to eat less from to minimize added sugar consumption. Remember, cutting down added sugars completely is not a realistic goal for our teenagers, yet reducing it with time and helping them choose better options for their sweet tooth from natural resources is.

– In Biology, Grade 9 students started with a new unit this month to study about global populations and ecosystems. We investigated energy flow and cycling of elements and matter through the four spheres we have on Earth (atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere). Students also studied about communities and ecosystems’ dynamics that help us understand the relationship between organisms among each other and the effect of biotic and abiotic factors in their environments on them, as well as factors that limit the growth of populations and its relation to extinction of species.

Alsalamu Alikum Dear Parents,

We pray that you and your family are healthy and well, Insha’Allah Taala.

This is a summary of your children’s Qur’an work during the month of October, 2023;

Primary:

Level One: (4 years old and the beginners of 5 years old children) Children practiced; Surah Al Fatiha الفاتِحة and Dua Prophet Muosa (as)

Level Two: (5 years old children) Children reviewed Surahs; Al Masad المَسَد, Surah Al Qadr القَدر and Dua Al Hasanah (as)

We usually focus in these two primary levels on the correct pronunciation of the Arabic letters and words, and on the memorization of number of small Surahs and Dua’as the correct way. (All Dua’as are from the Noble Qur’an)

Elementary:

Group One (level two Qur’an): Students learned the main three vowels and reviewed part one and two of Ayah Al Kursi آيَة الكُرسي

Group Two (level two Qur’an): Students mastered reading Surah Al Brooj, and started on Surah Al Qyamah القِيامة. They also practiced Dua Al Iqamah.  (All Dua’as are from the Noble Qur’an)

Group Three (level two Qur’an): Students mastered reading Surah Al Brooj, and started on Surah Al Qyamah القِيامة. They also learned (reading and writing) some Qur’an vocabulary such as nature 2, Animals 1, etc.

Our main focus at level two (groups two and three) is mainly on improving the recitation of the Noble Qur’an.

Groups Four and Five (level three Qur’an): Student mastered reading Surah Al Inshiqhaq الإنشِقاق, and started on Surah Al Mutafifeen المُطففين, they also learned (reading, writing, and memorization) some Qur’an vocabulary such as animals 1 and animals 2, etc.

Our focus for groups four & five is on reading and Qur’an vocabulary memorization, and also on writing; our goal is to help children learn the most efficient way of Arabic writing, and to help them develop a sense of direction of their Arabic writing (which is opposite of the direction of English writing), and develop a sense of the right size of the Arabic written words.

Upper School:

7th grade:

Group One: Students are still working on reading Surah Yaseen يَس, they also learned new Arabic grammars (Fragments inside the Arabic sentence) and memorized new Arabic vocabulary that is related to the lessons.

Group Two: Students are still working on memorizing Surah Yaseen يَس, they also learned new grammar lessons (back to back verbs) and memorized the vocabulary that is related to those lessons.

9th grade:

Students start memorizing Surah Sad ص, they learned new grammar lessons (Templates, the Agent  …etc) and they memorize new vocabulary that is related those lessons.

Salaam Dear Parents,

The beginning of the month marked the celebration to commemorate the birth of the Mercy of Mankind, Prophet Muhammad (saw). As we look on to the lack of mercy nowadays of the injustice happening in Palestine, we find hope in knowing that Imam Mahdi (ajtf) is here with us and our duas are with the all those who need them. Dua Kumayl reminds us that our capital is hope and weapon is tears.

The Lower El are getting familiar with the Command Cards as an extension of the grammar in the classroom. Writing expository papers are

The Upper El have been reading short stories from O. Henry and Guy de Maupassant, understanding the denouement and ironic endings. They have also tried their hand at writing short stories. Some of our young authors will enter their story in a contest.

In Mathematics, the Lower El worked on exploring math facts though the use of the Chequerboard and the Decanomial work. The Decanomial is the final layout of the multiplication table while also isolating the squares and eventually the cubes. In the Bank Game, the concept is to decompose numbers for quicker response time. The second years have taken off on long division with the Racks & Tubes. The Upper El are working to solidify their mental math through the power of the decimal system by moving decimals around without any math work involved.

In Cosmic Education – the sciences and history, as the earth moves away from the sun and the weather responds with coolness, we look at the sun and earth series of lessons. The view of this important relationship that Allah swt has set up will be examined from above. Lower El learn of the movements of the earth about the sun while the Upper El looked at solstices, equinoxes, and time zones. There was time for the Carrollton Fire Department to stop by and talk to us about safety techniques and technology of their important work.

Presentations are always a great way for children to be the educators of the environment and puts each child on the fast track to understanding and retention of concepts. Children prepare their work by writing drafts, editing, and finally presenting before their peers. This past month, we had presentations on crystals, fruit, and comparing numbers.

Islamic studies highlighted the merits of akhlaq or manners, concepts of Qiyaamah, Nabuwwah, and Imaamah. In history, we commemorated the births of Prophet Muhmmmad (s), Imam As Saadiq (as) and Imam Hasan al Askari (as). Lower El is learning to perfect their prayers through Jama’ah Salaah in the environment.

The Elementary girls age 8 and older received a lecture by Istadhah Zahra Hamka on the etiquettes of hijab and the relationships between genders. The boys, also 8 years and older, received a similar session with Sheikh Al-Saadi. These lecture series will continue once a month on various fiqhi topics.

Dearest parents, As-salam-o-Alykum.

The month of October is considered a “spooky” one, but not for our class– it was beautiful instead! As we are moving forward, nothing could describe the beauty of seeing children growing everyday. They may seem the same everyday but, surely they grow everyday as well! They may have started putting on their own shoes, which is a great accomplishment! You may notice them putting on their own jackets, which may not seem like much, but to the child it is a great achievement! It makes me joyful when I hear “look teacher, I did it myself!”

We are still practicing our Practical Life lessons, but we have also started doing a lot of Sensorial lessons. Many of our parents may be new to the Montessori method, and may not be aware of all these areas in a Montessori classroom such as Practical Life and Sensorial. Parents may ask: What is this? Why is it important for my child?

To explain, Sensorial activities play a crucial role in the development of the whole child. Children learn to perceive, interact, and experience the world around them and get prepared for success in higher education, life, and well-being. A Montessori classroom is designed meticulously to emphasize all five senses to introduce and develop everything that can be perceived. It helps prepare the children’s mathematical minds and encourages early language skills. Sensory activities introduce complex, abstract concepts to children tangibly and experientially. So, this approach sets the base for all future academic pursuits and provides an incredible educational experience. It is a learning that children will carry through their lives. The sooner children are exposed to different sensory activities, the better they will observe, understand, and process the information. The best example of this is when we start doing a knob cylinder with one block but gradually we add blocks and reach to the point where we do all four together.

While we are busy doing a lot of activities we also try to incorporate Islamic Studies in our daily routine. As you know we start our day with “Dua-e- Marifat” and now all our friends have started reading along. We are now learning names of our Imams and about our Holy Prophet (s.a.w.w). As we celebrated the most auspicious day of his birth.
Last but not least, we had a visit from the Fire Department and our friends were able to see the fire truck in person and were able to get inside the truck– how interesting!

With this we will wrap and come back next month with more news next month, inshaAllah.

October 2023 Primary 1 Class News

By Tasneem Mamdani Primary Guide.

Dearest Parents Salaam Alaykum:

Congratulations on the wilādah of our Noble Prophet (s) and Imam Jaffer-as- Sadiq A.S

Another month has come and gone. October brought us fall colors, apples, and pumpkins. We are all really enjoying the cooler days and beautiful colors of fall.

The change in the weather brought talk of the seasons and what the four seasons are. The children have enjoyed sequencing the seasons and making books of various tree formations for each season. In the science area we are also focusing on the leaf, and children have had fun leaf rubbing and naming the different types of leaves and their trees.

As the months change, so do our works in the classroom. We go from parts of the apple, and life cycle of the apple, to the parts of the pumpkin and life cycle of the pumpkin.

We love our parts of a pumpkin, and we saw and smelled the parts up close. Our pumpkin had very thick skin over an inch and a half. We have been scrubbing pumpkins, scooping the seeds, and pulling pulp out. How many seeds will be in one pumpkin? We estimated and counted by 10’s to find out the answer.

Visit from the Carrollton Fire Department

This month we had the honor of hosting a visit from the Carrollton Fire Department at our school, and it was an educational and fun experience for the children. They had the opportunity to learn about the fire fighters’ uniforms and even got to tour the fire truck. Our primary students were truly fascinated by the fire truck!

Practical Life Skills

Students have been engaged in practical life activities, which help develop their fine and gross motor skills, independence, and focus. These activities include pouring, sorting, buttoning, washing, sifting flour, and tying shoelaces. We have witnessed tremendous progress in this area.

Sensorial and Practical Life

Language:

Students have made significant strides in language development. They are expanding their vocabulary, practicing phonetic sounds, and exploring early writing skills.

Storytelling and reading comprehension skills have improved with many children confidently reading simple books.

Our younger groups are learning their phonics, sounding, and working on their sound books. We focus on the sounds that the letters make a lot!  Not only can children hear and see sounds, but they can feel them by tracing the sandpaper letters. When a number of letters have been learned, the movable alphabet is introduced. These cardboard or wooden letters enable the child to reproduce his or her own words, then phrases, sentences, and finally stories. These are some of the letters that we have added to our sound books: L, C, and B.

Practicing on Chalkboards and Story Writing in Journals

Maths:

We’ve been focusing on the fundamentals of counting, number recognition, and basic arithmetic operations. Many students are now demonstrating their ability to perform addition and subtraction with concrete materials.

Math
