August 2023 7th & 9th Grade School News

By Mrs. Malak Charara, Science and Electives Teacher:

Upper School students were welcomed back into their science classes for the new academic year 2023-2024 and we also welcomed Alizar, our new enthusiastic student in Middle School.

In Science, Grade 7 students were introduced to the elements of the periodic table as the main essence of understanding chemistry. They learned about the difference between physical and chemical properties as well as the availability and abundance and uses of the most common elements on Earth.

In Elective Nutrition, Grade 7 students were introduced to nutrition and how essential it is to gain knowledge and thus awareness in this field of science for a healthier wellness starting from themselves and potentially their families if applied in their daily routine.

Grade 9 students were introduced to Biology as a vast branch of science that studies the natural world within and around us using evidence and supporting data. They reviewed what they know about the process of scientific methodology and importance of peer review and learned about the characteristics of life that define organisms.

Grade 7 students preparing and drinking a healthy smoothie of their choice that contains nutritious ingredients.
Grade 7 students trying to identify the 2 substances in their mystery mixture through its physical and chemical properties.
Grade 9 students learning about the importance of providing clear and accurate directions when writing experimental procedures and steps through the “Replicating Procedures” Lab activity.

7th Graders watching an introductory video about negative numbers and their uses in real world problems.

By Mr. Yusuf Ali, English and Social Studies Teacher:

In English, both the 7th and 9th graders began the school year considering the purpose of school itself. I created a series of videos in which I argued that being intrinsically motivated in seeking an education is superior to being extrinsically motivated. The students watched the videos at home and took notes. In class, they wrote summaries of my argument and we discussed and analyzed the main points. The 7th graders are currently writing an essay in which they summarize my argument for intrinsic motivation and respond to it based on their own reasoning and experience. The 9th graders task is more complex, because they not only have to summarize my argument, but also analyze and evaluate it before sharing their personal response to the claims. In addition to this, we also reviewed the grammatical concepts of subjects, predicates, independent clauses, dependent clauses, prepositional phrases, and sentence types, applying these concepts to the students’ own writing.

In social studies, both the 7th and 9th graders studied the overall history of the world from about 3300 BCE to the present, including the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Classical Antiquity, Middle Ages, and the Modern Age. This, of course, was a very general overview that did not delve into details, but is intended to give the students a wide perspective from which to understand the particular civilizations and events that we study this year. Both 7th and 9th graders took an essay exam in which they explained and described the highlights of world history. The 7th graders have also begun working with their textbook for this year, History Alive! The Medieval World and Beyond, and the 9th graders with theirs, History Alive! World Connections.

Our condolences go to our beloved Prophet and his family (pbut) and to you all for the Arbaaeen of الشُهَداء سَيِّد Imam Al Husain (as) and his companions, may Allah (swt) bless their souls, defeat their enemy, and make us and you all among their followers and supporters Insha’Allah Taala.

I want to welcome you all to our new school year of 2023-2024

In 9th Grade, we discussed the creation of the universe as well as proofs for God’s existence. We also discussed divine guidance, focusing on the life of Prophets Jacob and Joseph, with additional reading from God’s Emissaries.

August 2023 Elementary Class News

By Ms. Hind Sabir, Elementary Teacher

Salaam Dear Parents of the Elementary,

عظم الله اجوركم
As the year unfolds, the children are putting their natural, human tendencies to work. Orienting, exploring, observing, working, repeating, controlling, communicating, and moving towards self-perfection, the elementary is using the gifts that Allah (swt) has given humans to make their proper place on this earth.

The children are getting acclimated not only to the environment and the routine but also to the new adults in the environment. They are getting to know Ms. Arsla and learning to reach out to her for any needs after lessons. They are also interacting with Br. Haroon here and there. Sheikh Al-Saadi is guiding the children through our regular Tuesday question & answer sessions, but also through story time three days a week. Jamaa’ah salaah has been a great addition to the routine this year. Children in their third year of elementary and older are going to the salaat room at Adhaaan for jamaa’ah salaah and guidance from Sheikh Al-Saadi.

Children started the year by collecting their tools of their trade…learning. They were excited to receive their journals.

Children Collecting Their Work Journals

The journals are an important start to the elementary years. They are a way to keep records of their work and progress. Each journal color designates a subject. The journals last for the entire academic year with each page tagged by date.

Daily Journal (a diary of their work) is blue.
Language is red.
Mathematics/geometry journal is black in graph paper.
Islamic Studies is green.
Cosmic Ed (science, history, research) is purple.
Art or doodle journal is a small, natural journal.
Spelling dictionary is a mini book in a color of your child’s choice.

The start of the year is getting to know where each child is in reading, writing, spelling, math facts, and math computations. Researches are fully underway. Friends are working together in cooperation on cicadas, minting coins, najasaat and mutahiraat, birds, stingrays, and crystals to name a few. Research on Italy culminated on a culinary note when the researchers, Hasnain, M. Jawad, and M. Hadi made pizza from scratch for the classroom. Children are encouraged to also explore their culinary side by signing up for a cooking project now and again.

The weather this past. month has mostly been in three digits, persuading us to eat and play inside as a rule of thumb. Children are enjoying classic games like Pick-Up Sticks, Uno, jacks, and marbles that provide opportunities for fine-motor skills and important social skills.

Starting the year in Muharram always presents the lovely connection the children have to our Beloved Imam Husain (as). Every Friday, children coordinate a majlis and encourage their peers to participate and offer their knowledge, voices, and love to the majlis. May Allah (swt) magnify the rewards of our youngest members of the Ummah, ان شاء الله .

Akhlaq is the true standard of measure when it comes to following the Ahlul Bayt as they are the exemplars, الحمد لله . As a school, we aim to impart the best akhlaq on our children, whether it is saying salaam upon entering a space or using kind words with others. Children have role-models in the adults but also in their peers. Furthermore, they receive regular reminders in lessons and in day-to-day dealings with others. When children need extra support for akhlaq outside of this range, then they meet with Sheikh Al-Saadi as their friend to help guide them further.

Story Time with Sh. Al-Saadi

Reminders:

  1. Come to school closer to the start of carpool (7:45) if possible. It gives your child time to touch base with their friends and socialize before the beginning of the work cycle.
  2. All warm-up dishes must be labeled with your child’s name or placed in foil.
  3. Do not send empty-calorie foods such as chips, cookies, or anything having chocolate. Snack time, especially, is an opportunity for your child to make healthy food choices and form a habit of good eating.
  4. Nuts of any kind are not allowed at school.
  5. Lower El girls (1st, 2nd, 3rd years) must wear hijabs without pins, magnets, or a need for wrapping. Hijab is optional for 1st and 2nd years.
  6. Children are welcome to bring a light sweater to keep in their cubby if needed.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out with any question or concern, nothing is too small. My email is hind.sabir@wisdomacademy.net

August 2023 Primary Class News

By Mrs. Tasneem Mamdan, Primary Class Teacher:

Dear Parents Assalaamu alaykum,
We extend our deepest condolences to the Imam of our time, Imam al-Mahdi (peace be upon him), as we commemorate the Arba’een of Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) and the martyrs of Karbala.

Alhumdulillah! We’ve had a rewarding start, welcoming new students into the classroom. The children are thrilled to reunite with old friends while also building new friendships.
However, it’s important to remember that each child is a unique individual with their own rhythm of adjustment. Some children might find these changes a bit overwhelming, and tears during morning drop-offs are normal. We embrace these feelings, understanding that it takes time for our young learners to become comfortable in their new routines and surroundings.

Our Montessori classroom is organized into six distinct areas:
Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics, Culture, and Science. Here, the children enjoy the freedom to explore the environment, selecting materials and completing the work cycle for each activity before moving on to the next. The classroom buzzes with activity as they engage with materials that encourage various skills, such as walking, carrying, sorting, pouring, and communicating. Throughout these experiences, we instill a strong sense of respect for both the work of others and the materials themselves.

The shelves in our classroom are like special treasure boxes for our excited young learners. They carefully use Montessori materials like the pink tower, cylinder blocks, and puzzle maps of the world. These activities don’t just make them curious but also help them feel more confident and independent. We are attentive to each child’s unique interests and developmental stage, tailoring lessons that foster personal growth and progress. Within our class, the values of kindness, Islamic principles, and respect form the foundation. We emphasize the importance of politeness and treating one another with care.

Islamic Studies:

We feel fortunate to have Sheikh Al- Saadi with us on the campus every day. Our Primary students have the special opportunity to enjoy story time with him three times a week in the mornings. The children truly enjoy these moments, as they get to share stories and learn from him.

Our older students are currently exploring:
The presence of Allah everywhere.
Gratitude for the five senses Allah has given us.
The importance of saying “Bismillah” before beginning anything.
These lessons are taught through interactive discussions, stories, rhymes, and engaging craft activities.

A few reminders to ensure the safety and harmony of our classroom:
Ensure your child gets sufficient sleep for active participation.
Slice grapes lengthwise to prevent choking hazards.
Please provide only water in your child’s water bottle.
We are creating a class album. Kindly share a family picture to be a part of this cherished keepsake.

Parent volunteers:

A special note of gratitude goes to Brother Maisam Mamdani for taking care of our classroom’s fish tank, including purchasing the fish and ensuring its regular maintenance and cleaning.
Since last year, we have been fortunate to have Sr Kulsoom offering her time every month. She takes time to go to the local library and choose books for the classroom with my guidance. She brings these books to school and later returns them, providing valuable resources for our students. Additionally, heartfelt thanks to Sister Mariam for her dedicated effort in sewing the lovely place mats and napkins for our classroom.

We warmly welcome and greatly appreciate parent volunteers in our classroom. If you’re eager to share your time, skills to school activities, or even consider contributing from our wish list, please feel free to get in touch with me or Brother Haroon. Your support is truly valued.

As we conclude this first month, we reflect on the wonderful start we’ve had. Laughter, curiosity, and even occasional tears are all natural components of this beautifully diverse journey that we are sharing. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for the trust and support you’ve shown us. With great anticipation, we look forward to the growth and achievements that lie ahead.

Warm regards,

Mrs. Mamdani.
